Francisco José LÓPEZ VALDÉS
Investigador Senior N1, Universidad de Zaragoza, Madrid
Estats Units, 2006
Francisco Lopez-Valdes obtained a degree on Mechanical Engineer from the University of Valladolid (Spain) in 2002. He participated in the development of the Crash Analysis department of the CIDAUT Foundation, serving as the Subproject 4 (Motorcyclist Accidents) leader in the EU integrated project APROSYS. In 2006, he joined the European Center for Injury Prevention of the University of Navarra (Spain) where he focused on epidemiology, injury prevention and assessment methods. In 2007, Francisco was granted a fellowship from “La Caixa” Foundation and he moved to the University of Virginia (USA) where he completed a PhD. His doctoral dissertation focused on pediatric biomechanics, exploring different scaling techniques to predict the kinematics of younger occupants during frontal impacts. Francisco returned to Spain in 2012 thanks to a Marie Curie European Union fellowship . At the University of Zaragoza, he is participating in the establishment of the first crash test laboratory with capabilities for Post Mortem Human Surrogate tests in Spain. The Impact Laboratory of the University of Zaragoza is the main structure within the newly created FIM Institute that was established to provide technical support to the International Federation of Motorcyclists regarding the improvement of riders’ safety. In particular, the FIM Institute is researching the performance of existing helmets and the interaction of competition riders with roadside protection. Francisco is a council member of the International Research Council on Biomechanics of Injury (IRCOBI) and member of the Board of the Association for the Advancement of the Automotive Medicine, where he chairs the Scientific Program Committee. He is a member of the Editorial Board of the journals Injury Prevention, Injury Epidemiology and Journal of Healthcare Engineering. He holds a Visiting Research Assistant Professor position at the Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering Department of the University of Virginia.
