Nace en Bogotá (Colombia) en 1963. En 1988 obtiene la licenciatura en Filología Hispánica, rama de Lingüística, por la Universidad Complutense de Madrid. De 1989 a 1990 trabaja en la Real Academia de la Lengua en la revisión del diccionario de esta institución. En 1997 obtiene el doctorado en Lingüística por la University of Southern California y entre 1996-1997 realiza un proyecto posdoctoral en adquisición de segundas lenguas en Carnegie Mellon University, financiado por el Ministerio de Educación. Durante el curso 1998-99 es profesor visitante de la Universidad Católica del Perú. En 1999 se incorpora como profesor asistente a la Rutgers University (Nueva Jersey).
