Nace en León en 1960. En 1983 obtiene la licenciatura en Geología por la Universitat de Barcelona. Máster en Geofísica por la Columbia University (1986), en 1991 obtiene el grado de doctor con la tesis "Investigaciones sobre el desarrollo de márgenes transformantes entre corteza oceánica y continental". Trabaja después como investigador científico en Flinders University (Australia) y, desde 1993, es profesor del Departamento de Geología y Geofísica de la Louisiana State University. Desarrolla sus investigaciones en los mares de Australia, la costa sur de los EE. UU. y los Andes de Colombia y Chile.
