Doctorado en Doctorado Severo Ochoa, 2016

Even before my undergraduate studies I was concerned about physics, chemistry, maths and also biology; that is why I studied such an interdisciplinary field as nanotechnology. While doing the bachelor in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology at Autonomous University of Barcelona I gained further interest in physics with always a constant awareness of the importance of being transversal and open-minded in science. Later, I studied the MRes in Nanomaterials at Imperial College London, where I started to work in theoretical and computational physics. In October 2016, I started my PhD thesis at the Catalan Institute of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (ICN2) in the group of Prof. Stephan Roche. My work consists on investigating spin dynamics in Dirac systems, namely graphene and topological insulators. Currently, I do numerical simulations based on tight-banding models of graphene-based systems and quantum transport calculations. For example, we are interested in heterostructures of graphene with transition metal dichalcogenides, topological insulators or ferromagnetic insulators to study the proximity effects that they induce in graphene, like strong spin-orbit coupling or magnetism. In these systems, we tackle important physical phenomena for spintronics such as spin relaxation or spin transport in non-local device geometries.
